Tonight, at this gathering, we all have one well-respected and dear person in common, someone who has gone – our professor Vlade Jerotić. Forty days ago, at the memorial service in front of the Temple of Saint Nicholas, devoid of chapel roof, there was only sky above the grave, like a heavenly hat. All around there were his closest associates, relatives, September warm and green land, and many, many people.

Professor belonged to all of us, just like when he was alive.

Until recently, we gathered in this room to discuss many important issues, always waiting for the professor’s final word. Like you and my fellow lecturers, I admired his ability to follow the lectures that preceded his. It is a great skill to reflect on what has been said during the lecture, and then to enrich the narrative with new, personal ideas. Professor did all in such a way that he related to every person in the room. He deepened our curiosity about new information, inspired by quotes and humor, often leaving certain questions open, with an intention to encourage and leave us constantly questioning.

The fact that he has always been our professor Jerotić was also due to his professional biography: doctor, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, Jungian analyst, professor at the Faculty of Theology, writer, an academician at the Department of Literature and Language and so on. I would like to elaborate on his psychiatric and analytical work.

How did young Vladeta Jerotić decide to study medicine? One reason, you probably know since it almost become an anecdote of his. He injured his eye and was treated at the Eye Clinic, where he fell in love with his doctor, then a married woman. The second reason was a sad one. A close friend became ill with schizophrenia, and a year later, he died of tuberculosis. The grief gave birth to Dr. Jerotić’s desire to find a solution to numerous sufferings and help people who can still benefit from that help.

After completing his specialization in psychiatry, he worked abroad for several years − in Switzerland, Germany, France, and supported himself by practicing his profession. In Switzerland, he worked at a department headed by a famous Swiss analyst Adolf Guggenbühl-Craig, a doctor, psychiatrist, and theologian by primary education, whose book Marriage Is Dead – Long Live Marriage! was translated a few years ago, which made the professor was very pleased. In Switzerland he deepened his knowledge of analytical psychology theory, and in the coming decades has been one of the most deserving people to spread these thoughts in our region.

He wanted to work in Belgrade and was head of the Department of Psychotherapy at the Dragiša Mišović hospital for more than twenty years, since 1961. We will not go into the complex subject of history of psychiatry in this region but leave it to future historians to consider. The professor worked diligently at that time and was already considered an exceptional erudite. There is an anecdote about a young man who wanted to turn to him as a psychotherapist. However, he thought that one could not talk to Dr. Jerotić if he/she had not read extensive psychological, philosophy, and literary opus. So, he started reading. And he read, read, according to his own plan. When he decided that it was time to schedule an interview with the professor, Dr. Jerotić had already retired.

Dr. Jerotić’s retirement referred to his work at the Psychiatry Department. He accepted the role of a lecturer of Pastoral Psychology at the Faculty of Theology. At that time, in the late eighties, one could be employed as a psychiatrist and lecturer at many other faculties, but not at the Faculty of Theology. So, the professor had to make a choice.

Notwithstanding, his presence in psychiatric and psychotherapeutic circles did not end there. He continued practicing analysis and supervising younger colleagues. As one of the founders of the Belgrade Analytical Circle, which brought together experts studying and applying analytical psychology ideas in their work, he continued to pass on his knowledge to younger generations. He was one of the members who supervised younger colleagues for years and attended supervising sessions at this Association. Maybe needleless to say, but this was done voluntarily, which is very rare nowadays.

Professor addressed young colleagues in such a way that he always referred to what was done well, and pointed out what could have been done differently, without any rigor. Members of the zero generation of future analysts, including myself, were nervous in from of him given professor’s authority, but that same positive authority of his was the thing that quickly calmed us down in the end. After completing the formal part, some of us would always get unintentional encouragement from the professor while talking privately. I remember one situation in which he addressed a colleague: “You visited Zurich? Nice. Tell me what it is like in Zurich. I used to spend a lot of time there. It is an interesting city. I will not travel there again, so I am interested to hear how it is there now.” This happened in the early 2000s. The professor was very calm. There was no special grief, nor any pathos. For a moment, I realized that in front of me was a person who was calmly talking about his own aging — the experience of such a pure acceptance of this fact. I thought to myself: I have never seen anything like this before.

Professor Jerotić took care of his younger colleagues, and as you can see, many of us who are no longer young. He occasionally questioned us on how many difficult cases we encounter in our practice on a weekly basis, warning us that this number must always be limited.

He left a mark on younger generations of future analysts and passed the exam that many great professors failed − he was not burdened by pride and hidden fear that he would be outdated in the future.

Dr. Jerotić was a lifelong president of the Serbian Analytical Society, a IAAP Developing Group. His advice to us was to read fairy tales because we need those, especially nowadays when the intellect is overfed, while emotions are starved. Although he did not have many moments of rest himself, except when he was listening to music with his wife Jelena or hiking in his younger years, he encouraged us to go on vacations. He made a distinction between quietness and silence. He loved silence. The most beautiful day for him was the one when he attended a liturgy in a monastery in Russia.

I want to believe that he left us with peace that these memories bring.

In three days, it will be forty days since the death of Professor Jerotić. In conclusion, I give you the obituary dedicated to him by the youngest members of the psychotherapeutic association which he belonged to, the Serbian Analytical Society:

To our dear professor, lifelong honorary president and one of the founders of our Society,

We are grateful for the knowledge, love, warmth, and support he selflessly gave us until the very end of his long and fruitful life.

Eternal glory and memory,

Serbian Analytical Society

                                Dr. Bojana Stamenković Rudić

                  Remembering Professor Vladeta Jerotić,

         Ilija M.
